REPUBLIC DAY PARADE - 2005
 

"Republic Day" is celebrated on 26 Jan every year to commemorate sovereignty of the Nation. On this day in 1950, our country became Republic and Constitution in its present form was formally adopted.

A grand parade will be organised in National Capital at Rajpath to commemorate the Republic Day. His Excellency Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, The Honourable President of India, will take the salute. His Excellency Sri Jigme Singhe Wanchuk, King of Bhutan, will be the Chief Guest on the occasion. The Parade will also be graced by several National and Foreign Dignitaries.

US media praises India’s role in tsunami relief

Washington, January 20: India's effective response to the tsunami disaster at home and its major role in helping neighbouring countries has underscored its emergence in recent years as "an increasingly potent diplomatic and economic power," a leading American daily said today.

Besides this, "It has also highlighted the growing capability of the Indian military as well as its improving ties to other major powers with interests in the region, particularly the United States," The Washington Post said.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 (New Delhi): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today congratulated Sania Mirza on her performance in the Australian Open Tennis Championship.

"I was delighted to see how skilfully you played a fine game of tennis with a world champion Serena Williams. You have made millions of us in India happy and proud," Singh said in his message.

 
 

"I was impressed by the confidence you displayed and by the fact that you played not merely to win, but to play a good game," he said.

J.N. Dixit Memorial Lecture
 

CHENNAI, JAN.12. The External Affairs Minister, K. Natwar Singh, told The Hindu today that he has decided to institute the J.N. Dixit Memorial Lecture in recognition of the late Foreign Secretary and National Security Adviser's exceptional contributions. A distinguished person will give the annual lecture on `Mani' Dixit's birthday, January 8. The Ministry of External Affairs will organise the lectures, the Minister said.

Microsoft opens R&D facility in B'lore
 

BANGALORE, Jan 12 (IANS) Microsoft, the global major in software, services and solutions, on Wednesday launched its research facility in Bangalore. The Microsoft Research India (MSRI), the third such facility outside the US and sixth of its kind in the world by Microsoft, was inaugurated by Minister of State for Science and Technology and Ocean Development Kapil Sibal.
"One of our key goals is to deepen our engagement with India. MSRI's funding of ICT projects is an example of our long-term commitment to collaborating with Indian academia. We see this engagement becoming even stronger in the future," said Microsoft India chairperson Ravi Venkatesan.
